Summer Reading Program

Library Fun for Everyone!

The Summer Reading Program has a variety of events and activities for babies, children, teens, adults & all ages each year in June and July. Story times, art days, LEGO™ Clubs, movie nights, and guest speakers are hosted at the library. You choose where to take the reading challenges and family adventures you can complete outside the library!

2017 Summer Reading Starts May 30

It’s big-screen fun for all ages with our summer Movie Nights, Mondays @ 7PM, June 12 & 26, July 10 & 24. Movies shown will be rated G or PG; specific titles will be announced one week in advance.

Rolling Hills Zoo returns to the Library Wednesday, June 14 @ 11 AM. All ages are invited as we both learn about animals and see some as well!

While enjoying Midsummer’s Day, Saturday, June 17, stop in the Library for come-and-go activities celebrating Lindsborg’s Swedish heritage, including a Scandinavian-inspired art project for the young & young at heart! Some activities will be available all day; some will only be available 3-5 PM.

Events for age 0-5 are story time programs 20 minutes in length. Tales for Tots is designed for children age 2-5; Books & Babies is designed for children age 0-2; both are to be attended with an adult. Younger or older siblings are welcome. Tales for Tots is held Tuesdays @ 10:30 AM, May 30 – July 25; Books & Babies is held Fridays @ 10:30 AM, June 2 – July 28.

Messy Makers Events are special sessions of our story time programs that focus on more in-depth hands-on learning. Both Tots and Babies will have water sensory days; Tots will also have Kinetic Sand sensory days. Tots Messy Makers dates will be June 13 & 27, July 11 & 25. Babies Messy Makers dates will be June 30 & July 28. Special thanks to the Smoky Valley Community Foundation for providing sponsorship of our Messy Makers program!

There are many fun options for K-6th graders to build summer fun at the Library this summer! K-6th Graders will meet Thursdays @ 4PM for Library Makers, LEGO™ Club, or Cook & Eat programs. Schedule is as follows: Library Makers June 1 & 29; LEGO™ Club June 8 & 22, July 6 & 20; Cook & Eat June 15 & July 13. Creative Art is held Wednesdays @ 10:30 AM, June 21 & 28, July 12 & 26. Library Makers features a project in the Makerspace (new this summer thanks to Sponsor Smoky Valley Community Foundation!); LEGO™ Club reads a book, then builds to meet creative challenges; Cook & Eat is a hands-on cooking class with samples to try at the end of the session; and Creative Art offers an opportunity to make art in a variety of styles.

Library Maker Circuitry meets Mondays @ 2PM for 5th & 6th Grade June 5 & 19, July 3 & 17. Come practice building many projects using Snap Circuits! Start with a blueprint… then explore building your own! Special thanks to the Smoky Valley Community Foundation for providing sponsorship of our Circuitry program!

Adults are invited to join us for A Taste of Travel, Wednesday June 7 & July 5 @ 7PM. Light snacks native to our destination will be served along with a television travel log and discussion. In June, we will visit Israel; in July, we will travel to Italy.

Join the fun with these self-paced Reading Challenges! Ages 0-5, track books as a part of “1000 Books Before Kindergarten.” Kids 12 & Younger, pick up your Summer Reading Program Blueprints to track minutes read and earn great prizes from our sponsors. Teens & Adults, submit slips for each book read into our Reading Jar for chances to win a prize from our drawing.

Take Summer Reading out of the Library with the Family Adventure: eight self-paced challenges for the entire family to complete together! Pick up your adventure maps and challenge sheets at the front desk; each completed challenge sheet earns a sticker for your adventure map and a chance to win one of the two grand prize drawings! Prize drawings will be held June 30 & July 31.

When our summer draws close to the end, come to We Built a Better World! Thursday, July 27 @ 4 PM. Come share your Build a Better World projects, learn how others have been at work in our community, and join the celebration of a summer well done!
